Diane's Plan For Loop 1604 and Hwy. 281 North PDF Print E-mail

Diane believes that immediate, short-term traffic congestion relief at the intersection of Loop 1604 and Hwy. 281 North can be accomplished by fully implementing non-tolled connectors, the Super Street design and light synchronization.

But in order to solve this growing traffic problem for the long term, she will pursue a strategic plan that includes:
  • First four non-tolled connectors: Diane made the motion to leverage $20 million in Federal Stimulus funds to the Texas Transportation Committee in order to acquire $140 million for project completion. Estimated that work can begin this summer.
  • 281 Super Street: Diane worked to formulate strategy for full funding. Estimated that work can begin this summer.
  • Citywide Light Synchronization: First ever program to move traffic through intersections. Diane fought for its inclusion in the 2008 and 2009 city budgets, including prioritizing the clogged Stone Oak area corridors.
  • Developing a short and a long-term strategy for Hwy. 281 road expansion
  • Working to expand lane capacity of central arteries in the 281/1604 area
  • Creating a comprehensive Transportation Plan that aligns transportation efforts includes formulation of light rail, expanded bus rapid transit lines, and other transportation options.
  • Investing greater city resources in street infrastructure and traffic remediation.

  • Road expansions underway:
      • Bulverde (City/County Project): will come to council on May 21st to approve contract with contractor; could begin by end of 2009; will start at 1604 and work up towards Evans (north of Evans is the County portion); should be completed by 2011/12; there are some environmentally sensitive caves along the northern part that could slow the project down
      • Blanco (Tx Dot/County Project): project is being done by the county as a pass-thru for TxDot; should be substantially complete by Spring 2010
  • Intersection improvements:
      • Knight Cross- Stone Oak Parkway
      • Huebner
      • Sonterra
      • Canyon Golf
  • Super Street: In design now through June/July; construction will then take place and will be completed first quarter of 2010
  • Evans Rd. & 281: District 9 funded a dedicated right turn lane from eastbound Evans to South Bound 281; HEB is funding a left turn lane from east bound Evans to north bound 281
  • Stone Oak Pkwy Improvements: See attached matrix
